The Ithaca Commons during the evening (source: Livability)
When I first came to Ithaca, New York from New York City, I was quite surprised by a few things. For example, there are many local business/mom and pop shops in Ithaca like "Sunny Days of Ithaca" and "The Outdoor Store" in The Commons. Most of the local business from where I'm from are either Barber shops, Nail Salons or Pharmacies. And while I'm not saying that those business aren't important or bad by any means, I do appreciate the unique services that some of the local business in Ithaca provide.
One example, is the "Autumn Leaves Used Books," a store that many people go to whether they read books or not. I remember when I first entered the store as a first year, I was hit with a massive selection of books at decent prices. Since then, I've visited the store whenever I get a chance and see whatever is available. All of these places are unique and special to Ithaca, which is the main theme of my beat.

Another thing that I found shocking was the amount of festivals and special city events at Ithaca. I first experienced Apple Fest, my sophomore year and was blown away by the amount of vendors and people at the festival. I had the chance to speak to a few of the vendors at the festival and they told me how long they've been coming to the festival and how much it means to them. These are more than just fun festivals, but an important way for people to connect with each other and the community.
But, the biggest culture shock to me is the community building aspect that Ithaca has. I recently did a story about the Danby Fire Companies pancake fundraisers and was impressed by the amount of people that showed up. The people that attended were extremely kind to me and each other. I can tell that this community is filled with so many things that make this city special.
