College students partying (Source: Student Assembly)
For my recent story, I had a chance to cover the salsa nights at Luna Inspired Street Food College Town and I think it was a great experience. I felt like I was in a film scene watching everyone enjoy themselves.
I remember my friends always used to complain that there was never enough places for people under 21 to enjoy themselves because apart of the "college experience" is going out and meeting new people. I like that Luna allowed college students who were 18 and up to attend because most places like Moonies, The Range and Level B only allow people who are 21 years old due to them being age to legally drink. Though Luna had an upstairs bar, they kept people who are under 21, in the downstairs lobby area. Additionally, besides checking IDs, the staff at Luna were constantly monitoring everyone throughout the night and even had wristbands for people who are under 21. While, I know that it can be a lot of work and sometimes daunting to have to keep track of everyone, the laughs, smiles and joy in people's faces must of been worth it.
I think the salsa nights were a clever way of ensuring everyone’s safety, while also not singling out anyone. I think that more establishments should try to find ways to cater to college students who are under 21 because that is the majority of their audience at times. College students that are 21 and over are most likely getting ready to graduate soon, with a few exceptions. And they don't always have to include partying. I think having paint n sips, with non alcoholic beverages or a trivia night would be nice every now and then. These are super easy to organize and don't require a lot of funds.
If places like Luna try to cater to a younger crowd, then they will attract a wider audience, which will gain them more popularity at the end of the day.
