Hidden gems: What makes Ithaca special.

Every city has its own unique charm: from the architecture to the food, to even the people that inhabit the city. Ithaca is no different because as the popular saying goes, “Ithaca is Gorges.” While I know that this phrase is associated with the waterfalls in Ithaca, I do feel that it speaks to Ithaca as a whole and not just visually because beauty isn’t just in looks, but by the work others do.

Since coming to Ithaca College, I’ve had the chance to explore Ithaca and Tompkins County and found some amazing things that make Ithaca special. However, there are many things in Ithaca that are “hidden” and not talked about enough.

Back when I took a class called “Visual Journalism,” I did a story with Senior Television and Digital Media major Jonah Schweitzer about the Ithaca ReUse Center and its impact on the Ithaca Community. One of the things that I found most impactful is that the center finds ways to provide jobs to people in lower income communities. I was surprised that this wasn’t talked about enough, which inspired me to center my story on just the sustainability aspect of the center, but how the amazing work they do for the community.

This semester, I want to focus on highlighting some of the work that many Ithacans do for the community whether it's hosting weekly workshops at the Tompkins County Public Library or organizations like the Latino Civic Association of Tompkins County that focus on community building. What do you enjoy the most about Ithaca? What can be done to bring more awareness to some of the things that are often overlooked in a city or town? What are some of the organizations and groups that I should look into
